The first Wakefield Lit Fest took place in 2012 organised by Beam for The Orangery and supported by Arts Council England. The inaugural event was directed by Robert Powell.
In the past the festival has spanned 9 days in September and features a wide range of activities. It aims to promote reading and writing for Wakefield residents and visitors, young and old.
