What? The festival aims to encourage readers to widen choices and has a strong commitment to new writers, partnering their events with reading groups.

The festival has a clear artistic policy which governs the programming of the festival. The aims include:

  • To inspire, challenge and entertain the people of Essex, the Eastern Region and visiting audiences through the provision of a quality programme of events with new and established writers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry
  • To provide a wide range of voices reflecting gender, disability, race, culture and sexual orientation of contemporary society
  • To ensure the programme of authors/performers is accessible to a variety of audiences
  • To reach out to new audiences for creative writing events and for reading
