2013 Festival
In A Backward Glance, the festival will celebrate the 2012 Cultural Olympiad with inaugural speaker Jonathan Bate. And, in this age of electronic mail, share the thoughts of those communicating in the past with pen on paper: Selina Hastings presents Nancy Mitford’s and Evelyn Waugh’s correspondence and Martin Stannard the letters to Ford Madox Ford from his American lover.
Favourite participants return: Haymanot Tefsa and Noah from Write to Life; Helen Dunmore, with her poems on the precious irrevocable past; Jonathan Korejko with a paper making workshop; and Alan Rusbridger and Paula Byrne with books to sign, the latter to discuss with bestselling novelist Joanna Trollope rewriting Jane Austen, who is also the subject of a talk by John Mullan. Edward Skidelsky and George Monbiot look back to find solutions for the future. Peter J Conradi and Rick Stroud have tales of heroism and ingenuity from WWII.
Gogol and Proust are presented in new formats. Typography, traditional baking, natural gardening, illustrations in Shakespeare and scatology in Chaucer are given an airing, as is, with a presentation of the new edition of A Land, archaeologist Jaquetta Hawkes’s engagement with the deep past. And, in a joint Music Festival event, actors David and Ali Troughton read imaginary dialogues spoken by composers from Palestrina to Messiaen.
