In October 2016 Seren Press published a collection of poems which celebrate fifty years of writing and publishing by the Welsh poet Tony Curtis. From the Fortunate Isles: New and Selected Poems collects work from 1966 to 2016 chosen from his published books, pamphlets and other projects, while the final section is, essentially, his ninth and new collection of poems. In June 2017 Cinnamon Press publish his selected short stories Some Kind of Immortality.
He first wrote seriously in his years as a undergraduate at Swansea University where he was taught by Dylan Thomas’s best friend, Vernon Watkins and where began his admiration for and friendship with the outstanding poet and writer Dannie Abse. He began to publish and win prizes during his five years as a school teacher in England, including the Eric Gregory Award from the Society of Authors in 1972, judged by Ted Hughes and Dannie Abse. He returned to Wales to his first college lecturing post and immediately won the Welsh Arts Council’s Young Poets Prize and had his first full collection published.
He attended Goddard College, Vermont in 1979 and 1980 as a visiting Master of Fine Arts student and through the 1980s won the National Poetry Prize and was short-listed for the Observer/Arvon Prize. Collections, critical books and anthologies appeared regularly through the next thirty years. He won the Dylan Thomas Prize judged by Dylan’s daughter Aeronwy Thomas in 1993 and received a Cholmodeley Award in 1997. He has toured widely giving reading in Europe and the USA.
He was given a personal chair at the University of Glamorgan in 1993, awarded a D.Litt. from that university and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society for Literature. He retired from the university in 2004 but is Emeritus Professor of Poetry at the University of South Wales where he ran the Masters course in Writing. Tony Curtis has published over forty books – anthologies, critical works, poetry and artist interviews. His manuscript and correspondence archives are held by the National Library of Wales.
The poems reverberate with present, sensuous experience, but beyond their immediacy there is a deep hinterland of public and private histories, of grief and delight – Helen Dunmore
His energy, inventiveness and human sympathy make him one of the most exciting poets of his generation – Merryn Williams
One of the best poets to surface in Wales in the 1970s – Anthony Conran
What is never in doubt is the essential humanity of these poems – Lawrence Sail.
These poems compellingly draw the reader close to the poet’s own illuminated responses – Dannie Abse
Rarely have I been so impressed by a book of poetry – the work is edgy and yet very beautiful – Andrew Wyeth
