The Essex Book Festival began in 1999. In 2011 the Festival became independent and is run by a board of volunteer directors with financial support from Essex County Council Libraries and the University of Essex with significant funding from the Arts Council.
300 speakers and 100 events, the Essex Book Festival is returning in 2020 in celebration of the 400th anniversary of The Mayflower, under the theme ‘Brave New Worlds’.
When? Throughout March each year. 28 February – 31 March 2020
Where? The Essex Book Festival takes place in 40+ venues across the county, including Southend and Thurrock (Essex UK not Connecticut, USA just in case you get lost)
Who? 2020 – Jess Phillips MP (on her bestselling book Truth to Power), renowned Scottish crime writer Val McDermid, and author of The Girl with the Louding Voice, Abi Dare, as well as progressional talks and events surrounding climate change, workshops fashioned for writers, poetry performances
