Haselmere Tennyson Literary Weekend -
What? Haslemere is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Alfred, Lord Tennyson with a packed weekend of events including Michael Rosen, Andrew Motion and a visit to Aldworth House. Happy birthday Alf.
The weekend is part of the larger Haslemere Festival which has some 90 events of various hue and colour. The festival runs from 13th to 31st May.

Friday and Saturday (22nd -24th May)
Friday Afternoon with Michael Rosen £;5
1.30pm Our weekend starts at the Haslemere Hall with
the well known Children’s Laureate who will entertain
both the young and old alike!
Friday Night Gala Dinner with Andrew Motion £;95
7.00pmThe Georgian House Hotel hosts a black tie
champagne reception and four course dinner with
special guest Andrew Motion, the current Poet
Laureate, who will read some of Tennyson's poems and
give his reflections on them. After dinner, he will give the
debut reading of his own poem written especially for the
occasion.
Saturday Lectures
Professor Leonée Ormond £;10
11.00am A renowned speaker in her field, Professor
Ormond will talk on Alfred, Lord Tennyson, in the
Lecture Hall of one of Haslemere’s jewels, the
Haslemere Educational Museum. She will concentrate
on Tennyson’s life whilst in Haslemere.
Picnic Lunch £;15
From 12.30pm Enjoy a ready-prepared picnic lunch
featuring local produce & half a bottle of wine.
Dr Brian Hinton £;10
2.00pmA leading authority on the Tennyson Circle
Dr Hinton’s lecture will concentrate on the work of Julia
Margaret Cameron, one of the earliest photographers
and a friend & neighbour of Tennyson.
Pre-concert Dinner £;20
6.00pm A two course dinner at a local restaurant
conveniently placed for the evening concert.
Tennyson Concert £;20
8.00pm For our evening entertainment we move to St.
Christopher’s church. Oliver Davies (piano), Daniela
Lehner (mezzo soprano) and other artists will perform
a specially researched programme of music
Sunday
Choral Matins
11.15am A service in St Bartholomew's church with a
sermon on an aspect of Tennyson's work. Then gather
under the poet's Memorial by J.H.Dearle (1899) to
learn the history of this beautiful window with Bernard
Coe, President of the Haslemere Educational Museum.
Lunch with Martin Muncaster £; 25
1.30pmIn the beautiful grounds of the Lythe Hill Hotel,
at the foot of Blackdown, we offer a roast lunch.
Looking over the lake, we will listen to a reading of the
Lady of Shalott.
Aldworth House £;10
3.00pmBy kind permission of the present owners, Mr
and Mrs R Keeley we will be able to visit the grounds
of Aldworth, Tennyson’s Haslemere home. Our
weekend finishes enjoying the truly stunning views
over the Surrey and Sussex countryside.
